Today, GreenTech Media published my response to a column by Sam Maslin on “The California Transmission Upgrade Debacle.” I completely agree with Mr. Maslin that the process California uses to plan transmission to help meet its renewable energy goals has some serious issues. In particular, external transmission lines like the Centennial West Clean Line are effectively taken off the “menu” of options available to the state. The Centennial West Clean Line will deliver 3500 MW of renewable energy from New Mexico to Southern California, create thousands of jobs, reduce harmful emissions and bring investment to rural communities. Given the low cost energy and resource diversity provided by projects like Centennial West, they deserve equal consideration in California’s planning process.
